How We Designed a “Daily Freebie” Feature Without Inducing FOMO

FOMO WHO?

Daily rewards are a dangerous game.

Done wrong, they quietly turn into obligation loops: log in or lose out. Miss a day, fall behind. Fall behind, disengage. We didn’t want that. Lettre is built around slowness, intention, and joy. We are no fans of anxiety disguised as engagement.

So when we set out to design our daily freebie system, we asked a simple question:

Can something be daily… without being demanding?

Here’s how we approached it.

1. Progression over pressure

Most daily systems reset. Ours doesn’t.

Instead of tying rewards to strict calendar days, we designed stamp drops as a claimable sequence. Think of it less like “Day 1, Day 2, Day 3…” and more like a path you move along at YOUR own pace.

Miss a day? Nothing disappears.

Come back later? You pick up right where you left off.

This matters especially for the “nicer” stamps, the ones people actually care about. We made a deliberate choice: no one should feel punished for having a life outside the app.

Each day, a new stamp which takes you closer to the week’s main prize!

2. Memberships that pause, not punish

Subscriptions are another place where FOMO loves to sneak in.

So we flipped the default behavior.

If you cancel your membership, your progress doesn’t reset or expire arbitrarily. It simply pauses on the last day of your membership’s expiry.

If you ever decide to come back, you resume exactly where you left off. Same place in the sequence, same progress, no penalties.

It’s a small shift, but it reinforces a bigger philosophy:

your relationship with Lettre should feel continuous, not transactional and almost as importantly, this is one of our ways of saying THANK YOU for keeping our lights on! Why would it be anything but delightful!?

3. Rewards that tell a story

A freebie is easy to ignore if it’s just… a freebie.

So we turned each stamp into a mini narrative arc.

Every claim contributes to a larger piece of worldbuilding. Early versions feel like sketches or fragments and as you progress, the stamp evolves: visually and conceptually toward a “final version” or “max level” by the end of the week.

You’re not just collecting items.

You’re uncovering something.

This does two things:

  • It gives each claim a sense of meaning beyond utility

  • It creates anticipation without urgency

You want to see the final version not because it will disappear, but because the journey itself is satisfying.

4. Designing for return, not retention

Most systems optimize for daily active use. We optimized for happy returns!

There’s a difference.

A system built on FOMO says:

“Come back tomorrow, or else.”

A system built on trust says:

Come back whenever, you’re always welcome here.”

We want to prove that the latter is better.

Closing thought

“Daily” doesn’t have to mean “demanding” and “Free” doesn’t have to mean “forgettable.” By removing penalties, preserving progress, and layering in storytelling, we tried to build something that feels less like a mechanic and more like a ritual you can step into whenever you want.
